Benjamin John Howard (born 24 April 1987) is an English singer-songwriter from West London. He moved to Totnes, Devon, at the age of 8 and is currently signed to Island Records. Raised by musical parents, Howard was introduced to a wide range of records from singer-songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s, including Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan, who had a significant influence on his music.
In 2011, Howard signed to Island Records, attracted by the label’s history with UK folk artists like Nick Drake and John Martyn. After releasing the singles “Old Pine” and “The Wolves” in 2011, he recorded his debut album, Every Kingdom, which was released on 6 October 2011. The album was later nominated for the 2012 Mercury Prize.
Howard worked with India Bourne and Chris Bond to create Every Kingdom. Bourne played a variety of instruments including cello, keys, ukulele, bass, and contributed vocals and percussion, while Bond played guitars, bass, double bass, drums, percussion, keys, accordion, and also provided vocals. The trio also toured together during Howard’s 2012 Every Kingdom tour.
In 2012, Howard introduced his music to the US, with Every Kingdom being released on 3 April. He performed at SXSW in Texas and went on a US tour. His song “Promise” was featured in the final episode of season 8 of the TV show House.
Howard’s live performances in 2012 included appearances on Later… with Jools Holland, Pinkpop in the Netherlands, Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Hackney, the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee, T in the Park in Scotland, Beach Break Live in South Wales, Bestival, Splendour in the Grass, and Austin City Limits.
