Mumford & Sons are an English folk rock band formed in October 2007. The band consists of Marcus Mumford (vocals, guitar, drums, mandolin), Ben Lovett (vocals, keyboards, accordion, drums), “Country” Winston Marshall (vocals, banjo, dobro), and Ted Dwane (vocals, string bass, drums, guitar). They emerged from the “West London folk scene,” alongside artists such as Laura Marling, Johnny Flynn, and Noah and the Whale.
The band initially released an EP, Love Your Ground, and toured extensively in the UK to build their fan base and generate support for a full album. Their debut album, Sigh No More, was released in the UK in October 2009 and in the United States in February 2010. The album reached number two on the UK Album Chart and peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 in the US.
Mumford & Sons quickly gained popularity throughout 2010, performing to larger audiences and making their U.S. network television debut. On December 1, 2010, they received two Grammy Award nominations, including Best New Artist and Best Rock Song for “Little Lion Man.” The band also won the ARIA Music Award for Most Popular International Artist in 2010 and the Brit Award for Best British Album in 2011.
